Q&A: Is a national or state government too centralized?

Question by YT: Is a national or state government too centralized?
We all know that a world-government will not be possible without a dictatorship, and that the bigger and more centralized a government becomes, the worse it gets for the citizens. But, is a national (federal) and state (“local”) governments too centralized, which allows for corruption to become rampant and widespread? Do governments and people only thrive under city municipalities, where the government is more transparent to the people and can deal with their needs much better than a state or federal government can?

The latest SCOTUS decision on free speech: will it have a greater impact in National, or local, elections?

Question by Bug: The latest SCOTUS decision on free speech: will it have a greater impact in National, or local, elections?
Mega-corporations have always had the opportunity to influence National elections, through their superior bank accounts, and their PACs, 529’s, back-room deals and “bundling” of campaign contributions.

But this decision opens the floodgates for Joe’s local corporation to influence the City Counsel and Mayoral races if he needs a waiver on local zoning or environmental regulations. Even school board elections are free game now.

If, for example, your city counsel passed a regulation banning soda from the schools; the local Pepsi distributor can now spend unlimited amounts of money either backing the candidate that wants to overturn that decision, or smear the candidate that does not.

Do you think the SCOTUS truly understood the full ramifications of their decision, and how it will affect politics at the local level; or do you believe they were only concerned with National elections?
trippsmith: Show me a union that exists solely “for profit”; one that would be willing to cut its membership to save its bottom line; one that has anywhere near as much cash as a similarly-populated corporation.
And besides, the SCOTUS decision includes Union spending, so your point is moot.
Substitute “union” for “corporate” in my question, and the point is the same.
Do you want the local UNIONS pouring more money into your city’s mayoral race?
lawrence: you *almost* had a good point, until you mentioned the 4th amendment.
Under the Patriot Act (brainchild of the Bush administration), anyone and everyone can be searched without a warrant. Look up “National Security Letters”.

Where can I find more information about a national event called Into the Streets?

Question by Michael B: Where can I find more information about a national event called Into the Streets?
It’s an event called Into the Streets where volunteers help out local organizations deal with either cleaning up or other civil actions. I need to find more information on it! Like an official website.

The national initiative started with COOL. Many college campuses have hooked up with the effort — kind of a one-day blitz of volunteer service, often with civic organizations (“Try it for a day — love it for a lifetime”). It’s in the fall. The web site for COOL is below. Idealist.org absorbed COOL then disbanded COOL. I can’t find the program on Idealist.org, but many campuses continue to run with the effort.
